Fortune Cookies & Fortunate in San Francisco
We’ve all heard of fortune cookies, right? But have you ever heard of adult fortune cookies? I had not until a leisurely stroll down the discreet, narrow Ross Alley in San Francisco’s Chinatown brought me to one of the only places in the U.S. still doling out handmade fortune cookies. Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory opened its doors in 1962 in the very city the fortune cookie was invented!
They sell your regular, run of the mill variety, as well as chocolate flavored and regular dipped in chocolate. I opted for the regular run of the mill, however, what was inside certainly wasn’t standard wisdom. Adult fortune cookies meant x-rated. I thought to myself, how bad could these really be? And then I cracked one open.
I thought my purchase would be a fun souvenir for the coworkers. Fortunately, they thought they were fun, too. They appreciate my sense of humor that errs on the side of dirty, sometimes, dysfunctional. Stumbling upon this off the beaten path gem had me feeling very fortunate even after all the crumbs were consumed. The coworkers and I all enjoyed a good laugh when someone received this “fortune:”

Fortune Cookies Photo Op
The sweet aroma of cookie de fortune will lead you to the fresh platter of free samples outside the doors of this tiny one room factory. Because of the factory’s small size, it can feel rather crowded. If you plan on taking a photo, don’t disregard the signs requesting a nominal fee of fifty cents or just buy some adult, x-rated fortune cookies for that dirty-minded friend back home! Your purchase will most likely cover the photo op fee, but do be sure to politely ask permission.
These truly are some of the best fortune cookies I’ve ever tasted. Perhaps this is because they haven’t been sitting in a box wrapped in plastic awaiting the next to-go order. These samples were straight off the cookie-folding machine!
Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory is located at 56 Ross Alley in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
