Flash Fiction February 2nd – Something Circular

I’m attempting Writer’s Digest’s Flash Fiction February (#FlashFictionFeb) prompts to start exercising that creative writing brain. I’ve been in super-edit mode the last couple of months, so I thought it would be a challenging and fun exercise. I’m not really a fiction writer, so that’s where the challenging part comes in.

Writer's Digest February Flash Fiction

Anyhow, enjoy, and if you’re so inclined, write your own flash fiction. I’d love to hear some of your stories, but don’t feel obligated to share.

Something Circular

Every time he stopped to look around, he was exactly in the same place the last time he stopped. The perspective of Judy’s room appeared just as it had before, and the food crumbs he’d left behind were precisely right where they were the last time he’d checked.

The only difference he noticed was that every time he stopped, it became quiet. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep going like this – trying to get away but always ending up in the same place.

“Rufus!”

He heard Judy calling his name, her voice muffled. Then, he panicked as he heard the familiar squeak of the door. He’d listened to that squeak so many times. Every time, it brought on the anxiety that triggered his tiny heart to pump loudly in his chest. It was so loud sometimes it drowned out the sound of the pitter-patter of his running feet.

“Rufus, how much longer are you going to be spinning on that thing?”

The voice sounded closer this time.

Judy reached into the cage and grabbed her pet hamster, Rufus, just as he started sprinting on his wheel again.
