Best Affordable Wine | Cannonau of Sardinia, Italy
What if I told you that some of the best affordable wine is also the healthiest? In fact, it’s so healthy, it’s been dubbed the “longevity wine” and is drunk by multiple centenarians in the blue zones of the Italian island of Sardinia. Centenarians! If you don’t know, those are people who have lived to 100 and beyond.
And blue zones – well, those are the few areas of the world where a heavier concentration of said centenarians live. There’s a fantastic Netflix documentary series on the various blue zones throughout the world.
Cannonau di Sardegna – The Grape of Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia boasts a significant concentration of these folks, and several things are attributed to these long lives. As of 2024, the island was home to 20 centenarians per 10,000 residents! And would you believe it if I told you that, among attributes like daily walks, close relationships with loved ones, laughter, and a plant-based heavy diet, that contribute to said longevity, is wine? Specifically, the Cannonau grape.
The Cannonau grape is genetically identical to Grenache, or Garnacha (whichever you prefer or wherever you are from). If you’re into wine the way I am, you’ve probably heard of this grape. You’ve probably drunk Grenache from time to time. In the Mediterranean climate of Sardinia, where challenging terrain meets arid winds, the Cannonau grape develops a thicker skin. As a result, polyphenols and flavonoids – the potent antioxidants associated with lower inflammation and better heart health – are more concentrated. We’re talking two to three times the antioxidant levels of any other red wines, including its genetic twin!
Affordable Wine Tasting
Naturally, I had to try Cannonau, noted for its health benefits. What’s more is that my primary care doctor was the one who informed me about the one she regularly drinks and where to get it. On a recent trip to Total Wine, I purchased three different bottles of Cannonau di Sardegna to taste and report back. Happy to do the heavy drinking, er, I mean lifting! After all, each bottle is about 3 pounds.
What better and more affordable way to wine taste than in the comfort of one’s home? The average tasting will now run you about $50 in California, depending on the region. Operative word here being average; wine tasting can easily skyrocket close to a hundred bucks in Napa.
If you’re a member, it’s usually waived, but suffice it to say that wine tasting, let alone club memberships, aren’t in everyone’s budget. A love for wine, on the other hand, should be part of everyone’s palate.
Two of the vinos I purchased are from the brand, Dolianova, that my doctor told me about. I bought a 2023 and a 2019 Riserva, which essentially means the wine has aged longer than standard regulations require, resulting in something with more depth and complexity. The other one is from Tre Cori, also a 2023. Each of them is around 14% ABV, with the Riserva being half a percent higher.
Spoiler Alert: I like them all!

Dolianova Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C. Riserva
$26 – $28 at Total Wine
While all of these wines excited me for various reasons, I’d like to begin with Dolianova’s 2019 Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C. Riserva. I’ve never been to Sardinia (yet), but on the nose, this dry, full-bodied red wine smells like Italy, at least the parts of Italy I’ve had the pleasure of visiting and living. I got some serious nasal nostalgia when sticking my nose in the aerated pour.
At first taste, I was a bit taken aback. Its intense, initial earthiness and balsamic notes open up to dark fruits and a lingering aftertaste that made me want more. In keeping with our blue zone friends and their healthy Mediterranean diet, I’d pair this vino with a spicy tomato and basil pasta to counter its low acidity. For a decadent dessert pairing, I’d opt for dark chocolate infused with berries and/or nuts.
Tre Cori Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C.
$13 – $15 at Total Wine
Next, the Tre Cori 2023 Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C. – this one smelled like summer in my 20s. It’s bright and fruity on the nose and tongue. Its herbal bouquet offers clean notes of spice mixed with subtle blueberry. However, its long-lasting earthy, peppery finish, alongside its crisp acidity, reminds me that I’m drinking Cannonau.
I’d pair this wine with pecorino cheese or even a rich cheesecake. I should also note that if this was a case of judging a book by its cover, Tre Cori’s label would win by a long shot. It’s beautiful! Although, Dolianova’s Riserva is a close second in terms of aesthetics.
Dolianova Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C.
$16 – $18 at Total Wine
Last, but certainly not least, let’s chat about Dolianova’s 2023 Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C. I got a little leather and dark cherry on the nose, so no, not as exciting as Italy or summer in my 20s, but exciting nonetheless. It’s a really easy red wine to drink. I’d go as far as to compare its ease with a California Pinot Noir.
This one is still fairly full-bodied and dry, characteristic of the Cannonau grape. I actually paired this with baked barbecue chips, and it was spectacular! I imagine other barbecued foods would pair well with this easy-to-drink Italian wine.
The Power of Antioxidants and Connection
The most exciting part about these wines, at least for me, is the fact that they’re packed with that substantial healthy punch of antioxidants. No one is saying the Cannonau grape is going to increase our time here on earth, but I bet there are a few 100-year-old nonnas and nonnos in Sardinia that beg to differ! At any rate, it certainly doesn’t hurt to opt for the healthier alternative in the meantime. And at these prices, it’s worth it.
It’s also important to note that drinking, along with most things, should be done in moderation. These 100+ year-old individuals drinking Cannonau every day are doing so in the company of loved ones, over delicious, healthy meals, and those things are equally, if not even more, essential to living a long and healthy lifestyle. I think Layne Randolph said it best: “Wine in Sardinia is more about connection than intoxication.” And we could all use a bit, if not, a lot more, genuine connection.
Salute!
